82years: life expectancy at birth (men 80, women 84)
67state pension age in the game

In One Life, a British life is born in Leeds, Coventry, Swansea, Sunderland, Luton or Dundee: real working towns, not London. Children walk to school. The money is in pounds, and the sums are smaller than in the US on both sides: pay is lower, and so are many of the bills.

What the game gives you

The biggest difference from an American life is health care. Medicine in the UK is paid for by the National Health Service, so an illness in the game costs a British life a small fraction of what the same illness costs an American one. Nobody is ruined by a diagnosis. Waiting is another matter.

University costs less than in the US, though not nothing, and the exams that decide the way there are the ones British children know. The state pension starts at 67 in the game, and pays less than Social Security does in the US relative to the game’s money.

What takes more of a British life than people expect is housing. Rent and house prices in much of the UK take a large share of pay, and the game prices them that way, so “Buy a home?” is a harder question here than the pay alone would suggest.

Money in the game

The game sets each country’s money against the United States, then shows it in local currency, here in pounds at a fixed rate of £0.79 to the dollar. In a life here, an ordinary job pays about 66% of what the same job pays in the US, and everyday prices are about 72% of American prices. A university education costs about 55% of the American price, and medical bills about 18% of what an American pays out of pocket for the same illness.

Those ratios are the shape of a life here. Pay goes less far than in the US at the top, and much further at the bottom, because illness costs so little. The large exception is housing, which the game prices high.

The odds

The UN estimates life expectancy at birth in the UK at about 82 years (80 for men, 84 for women), two years more than in the United States. In the game, a British life is less likely to be ruined by one bad year than an American one, and less likely to get rich. The steadiness is the point, and so is its ceiling.
